Begitu mendapat doktor, jadi selebritis atau birokrat. Ini fenomena khas golongan terpelajar Indonesia dalam ilmu sosial, ekonomi, sains, maupun teknologi sampai sekarang. Kalau ada daftar kekecualian, Tjia May On pasti masuk dalam barisan pendek itu.
Dalam 33 tahun penelitiannya, individual maupun dalam tim, guru besar Fisika ITB kelahiran Probolinggo 25 Desember 1934 ini telah menerbitkan dua buku teks dan 190 risalah. Sebagian dipublikasikan di jurnal internasional Physical Review, Nuclear Physics, Physica C, International Journal of Quantum Chemistry, Review of Laser Engineering, dan Journal of Non-linear Optical Physics.
Menyelesaikan sarjana fisika tahun 1962 dari ITB. Setahun kemudian memasuki studi fisika partikel di Northwestern University, AS hingga PhD tahun 1969 dengan tesis Saturation of A Chiral Charge-Current Commutator. Tahun 1966, risetnya bersama fisikawan CH Albright dan LS Liu masuk Physical Review Letters dengan judul Quark Model Approach in the Semileptonic Reaction.
Studi partikel kuantum dan kosmologi relativistik, dua bidang yang mengubah pandangan dunia secara radikal-revolusioner awal abad XX tentang alam semesta dan asal-usulnya, baru dimasuki sarjana fisika Indonesia awal 1960an. Sepuluh tahun kemudian tercatat hanya lima nama yang punya otoritas bicara tentang kuantum dan relativitas: Ahmad Baiquni, Muhammad Barmawi, Tjia May On, Pantur Silaban, dan Jorga Ibrahim. Mereka angkatan pertama yang jumlah penerusnya relatif sedikit dibanding bidang fisika terapan.

Fisikawan di bidang Partiel Kuantum dan Kosmologi Relativistik
Tjia May On merupakan salah satu dari enam ilmuwan Indonesia yang masuk daftar Wise Index of Leading Scientists and Engineer, pada tahun 2008. Daftar tersebut dikeluarkan oleh Comstech (Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation), lembaga yang bertujuan meningkatkan promosi serta kerja sama sains dan teknologi di antara negara – negara anggota Organisasi Konferensi Islam (OKI).
Nama Tjia masuk deretan daftar tersebut karena konsistensinya dalam menekuni bidang partikel kuantum dan kosmologi relativistik. Dia juga menekuni penelitian polimer, optik nonlinier, dan superkonduktor. Sudah 33 tahun Tjia tekun dengan penelitiannya itu, baik dilakukan secara individu maupun tim.
Tjia menyelesaikan studi sebagai sarjana fisika pada 1962 di ITB. Setahun kemudian ia memasuki studi fisika partikel di Northwestern University, AS hingga PhD tahun 1969 dengan tesis Saturation of A Chiral Charge – Current Commutator. Kemudian pada tahun 1966, risetnya bersama fisikawan CH Albright dan LS Liu masuk Physical Review Letters dengan judul Quark Model Approach in the Semileptonic Reaction.
Pada awal 1960 – an, para sarjana fisika di Indonesia baru mempelajari partikel kuantum dan kosmologi relativistik. Dua bidang itu yang mengubah pandangan dunia secara radikal – revolusioner awal abad 20 tentang alam semesta dan asal – usulnya. Sepuluh tahun kemudian tercatat hanya lima nama yang punya otoritas bicara tentang kuantum dan relativitas yaitu: Ahmad Baiquni, Muhammad Barmawi, Tjia May On, Pantur Silaban, dan Jorga Ibrahim. Mereka angkatan pertama yang jumlah penerusnya relatif sedikit dibanding bidang fisika terapan.
Pria kelahiran Probolinggo, 25 Desember 1934 ini juga sempat ikut riset di International Center of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italia, yang didirikan fisikawan asal Pakistan peraih hadiah Nobel, Abdus Salam. Saat itulah, dia meninggalkan fisika partikel dan memasuki riset polimer, optik nonlinier, dan superkonduktor yang menghantarkan namanya di kancah internasional.
Dalam 33 tahun penelitiannya, ia telah menerbitkan dua buku teks, 24 penelitian kolaboratif internasional, 86 jurnal ilmiah internasional, 44 presentasi simposium internasional, 44 publikasi jurnal nasional, dan 77 presentasi ilmiah nasional. Karya – karyanya ini, sebagian dipublikasikan di jurnal internasional Physical Review, Nuclear Physics, Physica C, International Journal of Quantum Chemistry, Review of Laser Engineering, dan Journal of Non – linear Optical Physics.
Guru besar Fisika ITB ini telah membimbing puluhan mahasiswa sarjana, magister, dan juga doktor. Selain membimbing mahasiswa doktor dengan cara seorang guru sekaligus kawan, ia juga masih mengajar di jurusan Fisika ITB dan program Optoelektronika UI.
