Prof Surono

Siapa Surono? Kepala Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi (PVMBG) Kementerian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM) itu lulus sarjana jurusan Fisika di Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) pada 1982. Lima tahun kemudian, pria yang tinggal di Parongpong, Bandung, ini terbang ke Prancis untuk melanjutkan studi.


Pada 1989, 'sesepuh' gunung berapi ini mendapat gelar DEA Mechanique Mileux Geophysique et Environment dari Grenoble University di Grenoble, Prancis. Seperti tidak ada jeda, pada tahun yang sama ayah dua putri ini kembali melanjutkan pendidikan. Gelar doktor geofisika sukses diraih dari Savoei University, Chambery, Prancis, pada 1993.

Sebelum mencapai posisi puncak di dunia Vulkanologi. Surono sudah merintis karis di PVMBG. Surono mulai menjadi staf Divisi Pengamatan Gunung Api di PVMBG sejak 1982 hingga akhirnya dipercaya menjadi Kepala PVMBG mulai 2005.

Berbagai keahlian tentang kegunungapian didapat Surono dari berbagai lembaga dunia. Seperti dari Unesco (Organisasi Pendidikan, Ilmu Pengetahuan, dan Kebudayaan Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa) dan USGS (lembaga Survei Geologi AS). Puluhan publikasi tentang kegunungapian dari Surono sudah terbit. Mbah Maridjan memang juru kunci pilihan Keraton, tetapi bukan tidak mungkin Surono 'Juru Kunci' Merapi dari Istana Presiden.
